Havasu Heat Outrigger Race — March 19, 2022
Get your paddles ready! The 3rd annual Havasu Heat Outrigger Race, hosted by Lake Havasu City Outrigger Canoe Club (LHCOCC), is right around the corner, Saturday, March 19th.
ARE Outrigger World is proud to be a sponsor of this fun-filled event. We’ve invited the whole ARE Tahiti family to Havasu and already have more than 20 V1 and OC1 owners who’ll be racing. But that’s just the start of what is being called the “ARE Invitational.” All paddlers are invited to come try out the rudderless V1 canoes on Demo Day, Friday, March 18, starting at noon. Expert ARE trainers will be on hand to give pointers. ARE Outrigger World is also providing 5 V1 canoes and 2 OC1 canoes on loan for the short-course race, so paddlers can test the waters in competition.
What’s more, ARE Outrigger World is hosting an after-the-race “Paddle Party” where you can “Meet the Tahitians”—and the Hawaiians, too—all experienced paddlers who will spread the spirit of ohana and the island culture with stories, music, and more. Come meet Tahitians Mana and Nanu, expert trainers who have paddled competitively on world-class 6-man teams, as well as Hawaiian-born Chris Cornejo, a Lanakila team paddler and current ARE Outrigger World trainer.
And don’t forget long-time outrigger icon, Uncle Kimokeo, from Maui—he’ll be there, too. “Kimokeo’s presence alone makes this event even more special,” says Gary Mortimer, head coach and Board member of LHCOCC. “His energy is amazing!”
The Havasu Heat race is a fund-raiser for LHCOCC, which will sell tee-shirts and hold a raffle, with the grand prize, a beautiful Marere Tahiti paddle, donated by Manoa Pro.
