NEW V6 MATAHINAS SET TO MAKE A BIG SPLASH IN HAWAII!

Good things come to those who wait. And Hawaii canoe clubs that have waited patiently will soon have one of the very best outriggers on the water—the ARE TAHITI V6 Matahina. The most celebrated canoe in French Polynesia, the Matahina has an unprecedented racing record throughout Tahiti and Australia.

Six V6 Matahinas are expected to arrive in Hawaii by September 1, courtesy of ARE Outrigger World, exclusive distributor of ARE Tahiti outriggers for North America and Hawaii. They will be delivered to canoe clubs in Kauai, Maui and Oahu.

Anticipation is High

“Many people here are very excited about the arrival of the V6 Matahinas,” says Christian Marston, a long-time paddler, ambassador of outrigger paddling, and Hawaii representative for ARE Outrigger World. “With its streamlined body design and advanced hydrodynamics, there’s no faster outrigger!” The Hanalei Canoe Club, where Christian paddles, already races a V6 Matahina. And the Kaiola Canoe Club, Pu’uwai Canoe Club, and Anahola Canoe Club will soon join this exclusive club.

Maui will also get two new Matahinas—one for the Na Kai Ewalu Canoe Club, in Kahului, Maui, the other for Kimokeo Kapahulehua, an icon in the outrigger world who has infused the sport with a true sense of family, or ohana. This will raise the total of Matahinas on Maui to eight.

Testing the Waters

“The people who have the Matahinas on this island love their canoes,” says Kimokeo.

But the Matahina, with a rich history of winning in Tahiti, has yet to truly establish a racing history in Hawaii. It will have a chance in the 1st Virtual Invitational Alenuiha’ha Challenge, September 6, from Kawaihae Harbor, Kona across the treacherous channel to Wailea Beach, Maui.

“Our goal is to claim this channel with the first canoe among all other canoes,” says Kimokeo, “which will be determined by canoe, paddlers, and the ocean itself.” In the future, the V6 Matahina will also be tested in races from Maui to Oahu and Oahu to Kauai.

“With my Matahina,” says Kimokeo, “I will continue voyaging the islands.” And with the V6 Matahina, there promises to be some rewarding voyages.

The Best Paddlers Deserve Nothing Less

“I am proud to bring the new ARE TAHITI V6 Matahinas to Hawaii,” says Joey Alvarez, director of ARE Outrigger World, “especially for the competitive paddling it will inspire. Some of the very best paddlers in the world deserve nothing but the very best canoe.”
