Philadelphia may be known as the “City of Brotherly Love,” but it is fast becoming the “City of Brotherly Paddlers.” A lot of the credit goes to the Philadelphia Outrigger Canoe Club, which will host the 9th Annual Hoe Wa’a Challenge OC-6 race Sunday, September 12, preceded by the 4th Annual Waterman’s Challenge for small boats (OC1, OC2, Surfski, SUP, prone paddleboard, and FISA rowing single) Saturday, September 11.
“We’re excited about the involvement of ARE Outrigger World in this event,” says Dave Kuntz, of Philadelphia Outrigger, “and so glad to be back on the water after a hiatus due to the pandemic.” In what is the only open-ocean race between Maine and Georgia, competitors are expected to come from near and far, including Milford, MA, Hoboken, NJ, New York City, as well as Chicago and Dallas. And the Philadelphia Outrigger Canoe Club expects a sizable turnout.
Paddlers Adapt During the Pandemic
“One thing that happened during the pandemic,” says Kuntz, “is that fewer people were paddling ‘Sixes,’ and many of them started paddling the OC1, which grew in popularity.”
ARE Outrigger World will bring two of its high-performance canoes for paddlers to demo-an ARE Tahiti OC1 Mana and ARE Tahiti V1 Marara (rudderless). Demoing the canoes will take place Saturday, September 25, at Philadelphia Outrigger Canoe Club, from 8 am – 12 pm. Don’t miss it!!
