June 26th marked the first time since the beginning of the pandemic that paddlers flocked to the waters for the first official Southern California outrigger race of 2021: Iron Champs 2021, at Mission Bay. The event, sponsored by San Diego’s Kai Elua Outrigger Canoe Club (KEOCC), attracted 850 people, including 700 paddlers—plus sponsors.
A Proud Sponsor
ARE Outrigger World, of Newport Beach, was proud to be a major sponsor of this exciting event, donating a new-model ARE Tahiti OC1 Mana outrigger canoe for a fund-raising raffle. “We were thrilled to support this race, the host club, and the outrigger community,” says ARE Outrigger World director, Joey Alvarez. Many people bought raffle tickets to win this high-performance, highly acclaimed ARE Tahiti outrigger, plus other prizes.
Glad to Be Back On the Water!
Noelle Murphy, President of KEOCC and the Iron Champs 2021 race coordinator, also expressed her pleasure with the event. “We’re very happy with our Iron Champs race this year,” said Noelle, “and feel very fortunate we had the opportunity to host.”
Iron Champs 2021 was a first step back to normalcy, and enthusiasm was high. “We saw nothing but smiles from everyone in the paddling community,” said Noelle, “all so happy to be on the beach and on the water racing again. Our paddling ohana is strong.”
The big winners
Strong is exactly how to describe the showing of the Dana Outrigger Canoe Club, which won the overall competition and took home the winner’s trophy. The other big winner was Lisa Stangl, who drew the winning raffle ticket and paddled off in the OC1 Mana.
Are Outrigger World, along with the entire outrigger community, hopes this event helped test the waters for more and more competitive events, as paddlers are eager to be back in the race. Next up: the Catalina Crossing – U.S. Championships, September 11 & 12. See you there!
